Brandon

My son is wrapping up his degree in Entertainment Industry Business so naturally, when I saw the news that the "Brandon" song had taken the number one spot on iTunes, I texted him a screen shot of the story from the New York Post (Oct 27, 2021) and we later talked about it. Here's what he had to say...

"In a way, I think it's funny how it even came to be a thing. But, honestly... I don't really like it. It's not about whether or not I agree with the people who are using the phrase. It's about what they mean when they say it. Your heart knows what you mean even if you're only sharing a socially appropriate meme."

Ouch. That stung a little... but I wholeheartedly agree. My son's statement sounds like something I once read regarding our outward actions and the nature of our hearts. It goes like this...

"You have heard it said... but I say to you..." These statements are regarding things like murder and lust... taking vows and taking revenge...loving your enemies and giving to the poor. All these statements are from the Sermon on the Mount contained in Matthew 5 and they have everything to do with the discrepancies we display when we harbor hate in our hearts and yet, claim to be His followers. If He were here today... and if He were to adapt His sermon to our times, He might include a statement like...

You have heard it said that good, Christian people don't say curse words. But I say to you that whoever curses someone through socially appropriate memes on social media has cursed them in their heart already.

I'm not trying to put words in His mouth. I'm just saying He might say something like that. And I say that because of what He already said about loving our enemies...

"You have heard it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect." - Matthew 5:43-48

I'm not trying to ruin anyone's day. I'm just trying to say...

He would probably tell us to pray for our president more than we bellow "Let's Go Brandon".
