This week, as I drove down country roads, I heard on the news of a milestone moment where the US State Department issued its first passport with the gender neutral "X" designation. Before I go any further (and before you put down this post without reading any more), this is not an opinion piece. I'm not here to talk about how I feel about this. In my research, I found that there is a small percentage of the population that is born with sexually ambiguous physical characteristics (.02-.05%) therefore they must decide within which box they must try to fit... when they feel like they don't fit in either. And the truth is...
We all struggle with our identity at times... if we're being honest.
We all have identity issues when it comes to who we are... how we are... and who or how we wish we were. You may never have wanted to have surgery to reassign your gender, but I bet you’ve done things to try to make you feel better about you. We all have! Some people lose weight. Some gain it! Some people color their hair while some shave their head. For some, it's a new wardrobe and some choose a new way of life. The bottom line is this… we do many things to try and settle the uneasiness we feel inside when we don't feel like we wish we did.
But none of it works. At least... not for very long. Before we know it, we find ourselves needing new things to calm the storms of feelings that will never go away. I don't want to seem insensitive to how any person feels, but I’m serious when I say that no surgery can satisfy the need for significance. Reassigning our identities (however we choose to do that) only reminds us that we will never be fully able to recognize ourselves outside of the One who made us.
So before we jump to judgment of people who go to what seems like extremes to be happy with who they are, let's be willing to admit that we all have our own identity issues. Let's accept that we aren't who we wish we were, at times. And let's be honest about the fact that we will never find real peace, fulfillment or contentment until we see who we are...
In Him
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17.
